Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release once the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
