In the early hours of Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major explosions shaking Tehran, following claims from Israel that it had carried out a preventative strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were observed billowing over the centre and east of the city.
“The nature of these blasts suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet reported, though it did not initially provide additional information.
Background: Rising Tensions and Recent Events
This event occurs against a background of severely escalated tensions in the Middle East. Major events leading up to this attack involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive build-up of American warships in the Middle East, featuring the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with indications of more talks planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered warnings regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face severe consequences.
Iranian Response
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. They rejected assertions about missile development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation is fluid, with further updates expected as the situation develops.
