The anticipation around The Game Awards was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.
A Different Direction
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team might be crafting a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a announcement clip is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it sparked the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities that are viable with a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously open-ended, letting players to improvise both in story and combat. Most missions can be completed in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
