Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
